Radiant Orchid was Pantone’s Color of the Year, but it’s blue — in all its variations — that’s making a statement. Value in investment and livable luxury are the buzz words in the design world. And mixed textures and midcentury forms will be trending in 2014.

That’s according to Julie Smith Vincenti of Nine Muses Media and designer Jaime Rummerfield of Woodson &Rummerfield’s House of Design. The pair hosted the “First Look: Home Furnishings” seminar at the Winter Las Vegas Market, Jan. 26-30 at the World Market Center.

The Winter Las Vegas Market is one of two annual markets in Las Vegas where retailers and designers can shop a broad assortment of home products from thousands of manufacturers. The trendsetting products shown in the wholesale trade show will be popping up in retail outlets in a few months.

According to Smith Vincenti, one of the main themes of the market is value in investment

“I think value in general is a strong theme for 2014,” she said. “The value has to come through; the quality has to come through.”

Rummerfield, who is touted as one of the nation’s top young interior designers by Traditional Home, Town &Country and House Beautiful magazines, agrees.

“Quality in 2014 is a big word for us. It’s about quality. It’s not about overdoing it or trying to underdo it or replicate something,” she said. “We’re paying attention to the finishes and the detailing.”

Rummerfield’s House of Design collaborated with Stanley Furniture and its design people to merchandise the showroom at the World Market Center. The third installment of Stanley’s Coastal Living Collection “blew us away,” she said.

“We were so surprised how extensive it was and the color options. … Their attention to detailing and the finishes is beautiful,” Rummerfield added.

The Coastal Living Collection plays into another upcoming trend: the nautical look. The collection takes cottage furniture to the next level and features a palette of colors that draws inspiration from the varied landscapes of the coast.

Other manufacturers play into the nautical look as well. Sea motifs, such as the cast resin coral accent atop Couture Lamps’ Solana, and authentic materials, such as the paddle mirror by Global Views, add playful, maritime accents to any room.

“It’s acceptable inland, not just limited to the coast,” Smith Vincenti said.

From the coast to the Upper East Side, Barclay Butera’s Central Park Collection epitomizes glamour and livable luxury with shimmering metallics, embroidered detail and Greek key motifs presented in tranquil blue tones.

“I think materials play a strong part in conveying that livable luxury,” Smith Vincenti said.

The combination of Lucite and metal in the Galaxy table lamp by Jamie Young defines modern luxury. Lucite is also featured on the oversized nobs of Jonathan Adler’s media console, a white lacquer chest with polished nickel accents.

1920s-era glamour is an important reference point across all product categories. The latest collection from Brunschwig &Fils, Hommage, pays homage to some of company’s best designs of the 20th century. The collection revives beloved prints that were ripe for re-launch.

Stanley Furniture went back to the archives for its Hudson Street collection. Grounded in midcentury design, the moderately scaled collection features simple silhouettes designed for urban lifestyles.

Midcentury forms are not only popular with urban dwellers but with 20- and 30-somethings. Tronk Design pairs vintage style and modern technology with its Vaughan Dock. The solid walnut dock offers Bluetooth technology, a clock and premium-quality speakers.

The 1970s bohemian look was also represented at the Las Vegas Market. Tony Wais Design chairs are upholstered with vibrantly colored patchwork fabrics sourced from around the world.

And furniture designers are still feeding the desire for sleek, contemporary looks. Sunpan’s Viper sofa features button tufting that exudes luxury and comfort, paired with sleek stainless steel cantilever base.

Creative Elegance has reconfigured its entertainment etagere to fit larger TVs and has upgraded drawer tracks and added LED lighting.

“It’s great when (companies) like Creative Elegance makes these type of pieces,” Rummerfield said.

“The proportions for these types of entertainment centers is very critical for the TV. Some people get it way wrong, and when it’s the focal part of the room and somebody has already figured it out, that’s really important,” she added.

Although neutral colors still reign for major furniture pieces, there were plenty of colorful accents pieces that made a statement.

Dazzling Blue is Pantone’s color for spring on the fashion runways, and blue figures prominently in interiors as well.

Phylum Design’s Boom wall-mounted cabinet is a white lacquer case with medium-blue decorative door panels.

“Indigo is really hot, mixed with gold and also metal,” Rummerfield said.

“You cannot have a conversation about blue without having a conversation about denim,” Smith Vincenti added.

Denim-inspired blues convey comfort and familiarity. The hand-tufted area rugs in Jaipur’s Blue Collection present overscaled denim florals and geometrics. Amity Home’s denim linen-and-cotton duvet cover, sham and bed skirt are winning complements.

Although Dazzling Blue is Pantone’s color for spring, it was Radiant Orchid that was selected as Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2014.

“It’s pretty telling that Pantone’s selection of Color of the Year comes from the apparel palette, and with that in mind, I think we’re looking at an accent color,” Smith Vincenti said.

“Radiant Orchid is a very dynamic color, so a little can go a long way,” Rummerfield added.

She suggests adding a little pink and purple to gray tones for some punch.

Classic Home/Villa Home Collection features an overdyed kilim wool rug in orchid that pairs nicely with linen accent pillows. And Safavieh’s Mercer Modern ottoman in a velvet that approximates Pantone’s Radiant Orchid will brighten any room.
